Bookish Pet Peeves

We all have pet peeves and avid readers all have bookish pet peeves. There a hundreds of ways/things that annoy me but here is a list of my: Top Five Bookish Pet Peeves.

5. Movie cover versions of a novel

Ugh I hate these. Why?!? I don’t get it, they are just plain ugly. A book is a story meant to last a lifetime. It can’t last a lifetime when movies age, actors age, technology changes and this just leads to the cover looking outdated, cheap and tacky. I am just downright not a fan of this…at all…ever!

4. Bookshelves organised by colour

Yes, I agree that they look amazing in photos and in person. It is definitely appealing to the eye. However it just doesn’t make any sense. I organise my shelf by genre. I have shelves for contemporary, dystopian, science fiction, fantasy etc… Each series and stand alone has its place and I can easily find them. I would hate to try and find a book and try and remember the exact shade of whatever colour the spine is. It upsets all logic to organising a bookshelf.

3. Cover changes half way through a series

I mean, what is the point of this? Make up your minds! I need all my covers to match, or I will not continue to buy the series if you decide you want to re-image your series and change the cover. I will even go as far as re-homing my books because I now find it useless to own a mismatched series, I don’t want to it at all.

2. Books that lead to a series that doesn’t suit the story

I hate authors who write their books to lead into a sequel when it just isn’t necessary. Some stories just need to be left.

1. Dog earing the pages and breaking the spine

If this is a book I own then get out!

I read almost all my books on my tablet, and then when I love a book I buy it as part of my library/collection. If I lend you my book it is because I trust you with my most prized possessions. Why do you need to bend the spine right down? It is hurting my baby and even more importantly why would you fold the corner of a page?! Why do you need to damage an innocent book? There are seriously an unlimited amount of household items for bookmark use. You could use almost anything. If you wreck my book, I will never lend to you again and you better buy me a new one, or see you later friendship.

Reading Habits

I came across this ‘Reading Habits’ book tag on the YouTube channel: BookJazz

I thought this would be a fun #booktag to do to introduce myself as a reader. I have also added in a few of my own questions, that I would add to this tag.

Questions:

  1. Do you have a certain place at home for reading?
  2. Bookmark or random piece of paper?
  3. Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter/a certain amount of pages?
  4. Do you eat and drink while reading?
  5. Multitasking: Music and TV while reading?
  6. One book at a time or several at once?
  7. Reading at home or everywhere?
  8. Reading out loud or silently in your head?
  9. Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?
  10. Do you write in your books?
  11. Do you write your own books?
  12. Do you read most in the morning, noon, afternoon or night?
  13. Do you read the book first or watch the movie?
  14. When buying books do you prefer the original cover or the movie cover?
  15. What form do you prefer to read on – E-book. audiobook or physical copy?
  16. Do you prefer to read stand alone books or books in a series?
  17. Favourite genre to read?
  18. Do book series have to match?

Do you have a certain place at home for reading?

Nope, it is all weather dependent. If I am cold, I will snuggle up in bed and read. If it is an average temperature I will read on the couch and if it is hot then I was usually lay out in the sun and read. I am a read anywhere kinda girl.

Bookmarks or random pieces of paper?

I will always choose a bookmark, however if I am on the go or my bookmark is in use then I will use random pieces of paper. The one thing I will never, ever, ever do is dog ear my books…I am not a savage!

7

Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter/a certain amount of pages?

I have to read on to the end of the chapter. I am so guilty of that ‘I will just read to the end of the chapter’ attitude. I don’t like leaving my reading in the middle of a plot line, because I am so forgetful. I like it when the chapters are quite short because I love reaching those milestones.

Do you eat and drink while reading?

Nope! Reading and eating are like my two sacred times of day. I allow time for each and then concentrate on each of them 😉

Multitasking: Music and TV while reading?

What the?!? No, I don’t have the multitasking ability to take in what I am reading if there are distractions. If I am in the lounge and my boyfriend is watching TV sometimes I can read my book, but if it is a challenging read with unfamiliar vocab, then I was usually need to go read somewhere else. I am pretty good at zoning people/noise out, but I could never actively try do both at once. One will be getting ignored.

One book at a time or several at once?

I have always been a several books at once reader. I have a ridiculously short attention span, so when I find a book hitting a dull patch I start another one. Then I can usually have enough enthusiasm to power through the dull patches because my reading happy meter is full. I also tend to read one light hearted read with a more challenging read at the same time.

6

Reading at home or everywhere?

I read everywhere and anywhere. I typically read at home, because that is where I spend most of my time. However I often read during my work breaks and I listen to audio-books whenever I am on my own in the car, especially on long distance trips! I also love going on holiday and taking books with me, then I try and find a cool spot to relax and read.

2

Reading out loud or silently in your head?

If I am reading for myself I read in my head. Sometimes I might get to cool sentence or word and read it out to my boyfriend. The only time I read out loud is if I am reading to my class. I love read out loud to them because when I read in my head I have different voices/accents for the characters and it is fun to bring that to life. They are always entertained my random characters, they will often tell me to not let the substitute teacher read, because they don’t know the voices.

Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?

Oh breaking the spine…absolutely not…ever…never! I like my books to look brand new. My library is a collection. I often read on my tablet and then buy the hard copy if I love the book to add into my collection. I don’t even lend my books out, If I love a book I sometimes buy two, one I can lend and one that is perfection.

Do you write in your books?

NO!

Do you write your own books?

I do. I only share them with my boyfriend and sister though. I go through phases of being really into writing and will write half a novel, then work will get busy and lose the momentum. By the time that happens I am usually board of my idea and will start something new. I currently have 4 half finished books. I do love to write though, I typically write stories I want to read or sometimes I will take an idea from a book I love and put a fan fiction spin on it. When I was a teen I wrote tons of fan fiction, I would cringe to search that username up and find it now.

Do you read most in the morning, noon, afternoon or night?

Any chance I get. Mostly night, but if it is school holidays, then all day every day =)

3

Do you read the book first or watch the movie?

I always, always, always read the book first. If the movie comes out and I haven’t read the book yet then I will put off watching the movie and hearing about it until I finish the book. I am generally pretty on top of this though, I have a TBR shelf on my Goodreads account for books becoming movies each year.

When buying books do you prefer the original cover or the movie cover?

HATE the movie covers of books. I get quite passionate about this, I especially hate if I am trying to buy a book and all I can find are the movie covers.

What form do you prefer to read on – E-book. audiobook or physical copy?

I most prefer E-book. This is because I can highlight and make notes on my tablet while I read, which is immensely helpful when writing reviews. I also love that I can take it with me and have like 500 books to choose from.

I prefer to collect hard copy books – obviously!

I love audiobooks of long books with multiple narrators. It makes the long books so much more exciting to read.

Do you prefer to read stand alone books or books in a series?

This all depends on my mood. Sometimes I want to read a stand alone and close the door on the characters. It makes me happy to just let them be. Other times I love series because I can’t get enough of the characters and worlds.

Favourite genre to read?

Again this is mood dependent. I love retellings, books about mental illness, dystopian societies and anything with an amazing cover!

Do book series have to match?

Yes!

I have the last book in the ‘Tomorrow When the War Began’ series that I don’t own because they stopped printing the series in that particular cover style. It will forever be incomplete, unless by some miracle I find it.

I tag anyone reading this!

ME!

R.I.P it or Ship it?

The original creator of this book tag is: Emmmabooks

I came across this book tag on Beatrice’s blog: Dreamlandbookblog

I thought this tag looked like a lot of fun, so I chose to nominate myself 😉

If you are reading this, then I nominate you! Tag me on instagram or tweet me so I can check out your results =)

The rules are simple:

1. Write down the names of characters from different books on scraps of paper. You can do as many as you like, I chose 12 books. I chose a mixture of boys and girls, from some books I choose both characters as girls and in others I chose both characters as boys.

2. Put them in a container of your choosing and mix them all up.

3. Pull out two names at the time and show them to your audience in whatever way you like. I am using my Harry Potter squad to show off the match ups.

4. Decision time! Do you ship them or do you want their relationship to die a peaceful/painful death? Tell the world!

The Books/Characters I chose to use:

  • The Lunar Chronicles: Cinder & Carswell Thorne
  • Harry Potter: Hermione Granger & Harry Potter
  • Throne of Glass: Manon Blackbeak & Celaena Sardothien
  • Red Queen: Prince Maven & Prince Cal
  • Me Before You: Louisa Clark & Will Traynor
  • A Court of Thorns and Roses: Feyre & Tamlin
  • Red Rising: Darrow & Mustang
  • Uprooted: The Dragon & Agnieszka
  • All the Bright Places: Theodore Finch & Violet Markey
  • Obsidian: Daemon & Katy
  • Vampire Academy: Rose Hathway & Dimitri Belikov
  • Insurgent: Tris & Four

Round 1:

Agnieszka & Theodore Finch

Uprooted & All the Bright Places

Oh goodness, the first one out the jar is a fail! Theodore continually dreams of dying and has his own mental issues that haunt him. Agneiszka is a girl who just wants to live in peace, she is sick of the wood encroaching on her beloved valley and village. These two are from very different worlds.

I adore both these characters, but definitely not together.

I can’t even ship them as a friendship.

R.I.P It!

Round 2:

Daemon & Dimitri

Obsidian & Vampire Academy

We have Daemon Black hot Alien (Luxen) neighbour and Dimitri Belikov a Russian Strigoi killing god/warrior.

Both have dark hair, dark eyes. Two dark tall, handsome, athletic, foreign…I could go on forever…men. I ship this as the most amazing BFF alliance and happily put myself in the middle of these two, because lets face it, these two as a married couple is fair to no one.

5

SHIP IT!

Round 3:

Tris & Darrow

Insurgent & Red Rising

Two people both fight for the underdogs. Ummm…sounds like a match made in heaven. Darrow is fighting for the reds, the lowest class in a archaic system set on Mars. Tris is fighting for freedom of the factions, another archaic system set in a dystopian USA. Tris is brawn and beauty, while Darrow is brawn and brains. These two together would be an unstoppable force.

SHIP IT!

Round 4:

Louisa & Tamlin

Me Before You & A Court of Thorns and Roses

Hmmmm…I had to think about this one. Louisa is a shy, introverted type character which is perfect for Tamlin’s lock them away in the house and don’t let them do anything attitude. However this would be the most boring relationship. Just thinking about it bores me. I must admit Tamlin does have Will Traynor like qualities in his sarcastic attitude and grumpy temperament, but overall I am going to have to R.I.P this one!

R.I.P IT!

Round 5:

Hermione & Prince Cal

Harry Potter & Red Queen

Ooooh what an interesting pairing. Hermione is a book worm, she loves to learn and is extremely knowledgeable. Prince Cal is also into his books, he reads a lot about the strategies of war. I feel like this would be such a cool relationship. I imagine more of pulling Hermione from her world and transporting her into the world of Norta, than the other way around. Hermione would be extremely helpful to Prince Cal’s missions and she would fit in just like a silver!

Fist Bump

SHIP IT!

Round 6:

Prince Maven & Will Taynor

Red Queen & Me Before You

Hell no! Will Traynor is good, he is broken, he needs love and support. Maven is a monster and needs someone strong and powerful to put him in his place. This is going to die a fiery death!

1

R.I.P IT!

Round 7:

Cinder & Mustang

Cinder & Red Rising

Girl Power! Mustang would be the perfect alliance for Cinder. Cinder would support Mustang with her technological genius-ness and together they would fly the galaxy collecting companions and having glitter parties…jokes they would both hate glitter! I am shipping this girl alliance.

1

SHIP IT!

Round 8:

Katy & Carswell

Obsidian & Cinder

Swoon… Carswell is the ultimate cocky, pretty and ultimately bad boy! Katy is the nice girl who happened to move next door to an insanely hot alien. Carswell flies spacecrafts…connection made, close enough. If you have read the Lunar Chronicles then we know he likes them shy, Katy is just his type.

6

SHIP IT!

Round 9:

Harry Potter & Celaena

Harry Potter & Throne of Glass

She would eat him alive! It doesn’t even matter that he has magic. She is a deadly assassin and even though he is ‘The boy who lived’ he would not survive in the world of Ardalan. I also can’t picture Celaena toning it down and heading to Hogwarts. No unfortunately for two of my most favourite characters, this was over before it began.

6

R.I.P IT!

Round 10:

Feyre & Four

A Court of Thorns and Roses & Insurgent

This is such an odd pairing. I spent ages just looking at their names trying to visualise anything. I can’t…They are from such different worlds. Feyre is a hunter who is out to support her family when she kills the wrong type of creature. Four has denounced all ties to his messed up family and is trying survive and conceal his divergent-ness. Nope, this is just a nope.

2

R.I.P It!

Round 11:

Manon & Violet

Throne of Glass & All the Bright Places

Hahahaha, I laughed so long at this. What on Earth? What kind of relationship is this. Manon kills and eats Violet. The end!

1

R.I.P IT!

Round 12:

Rose & The Dragon

Vampire Academy & Uprooted

Talk about saving the best for last. Rose is a badass, she has proven she likes older men 😉

The Dragon is like 100 and something, he is sexy as hell. This is like the pairing of my dreams. I feel like this pairing is so amazing people must have written fan fiction about it, if not…of I go.

3

SHIP IT!
